Irrigated industrial hemp trials at Manjimup will be on display as part of the Australian Industrial Hemp Conference, to be held in Western Australia later this month.
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development hemp research scientist Shahajahan Miyan said the trials were examining seeding rates and the performance of a range of cultivars.
“With growing industry interest in industrial hemp, research is vital in examining how varieties, sourced from around the world, perform in a Western Australian environment,” he said.
“Weather conditions greatly influence the performance of new hemp cultivars, both for yield and grain quality.”
The trial crop was sown in November 2019 at the department’s Manjimup research facility.
“Seed for this trial was sourced from the WA Hemp Growers Co-operative, with six seed varieties being examined, originally bred in Canada, China and France,” he said.
“The seeding rate was calculated based on seed size and germination percentage to achieve 100, 200 and 300 plants per square metre.”
The trial crops are being monitored for plant establishment, plant height at maturity, impact from insects and diseases, yield and grain quality.
The 2nd Australian Industrial Hemp Conference will be held in Fremantle WA from 25 February 2020. The field tours will be held on Friday 28 February.
